I was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. Even though I’m less than two hours away from home, I miss it constantly. Through homesick thoughts, I found it comforting to relieve them by creating an homage to it in this ceramic box. Using recognizable language and motifs such as the area code (502), Kentucky’s state bird, the cardinal, the famous Fourth Street Live, and the fleur-de-lis, to convey my love for my hometown brightly and whimsically. While also taking inspiration from the soulful city of New Orleans, Louisiana, as they both have connections with each other. I dealt with a few challenges with the white slip, which cracked after the bisque firing, and the clear gloss glaze sealed the box shut, which, at that time, frustrated me, but I now appreciate the result even more.
